Mega Events Mega events Mega sporting events are defined as those one-time sporting events of an international scale organized by a special ‘authority’ and yielding extremely high levels of media coverage and impacts (economic, tourism, infrastructure, etc.) for the host community because of the event's significance and/or size.

The definition applies to non-sports events as well as sporting ones, but excludes recurring events in the same location. The author proposes that within events meeting the definition, events can be divided into the size classes of major events, mega-events, and giga-events.
